Summary:

RITA® Award Winning author Alexis Daria brings readers an unforgettable, hilarious rom-com set in the drama-filled world of telenovelas—perfect for fans of Jane the Virgin and The Kiss Quotient.

Leading Ladies do not end up on tabloid covers.

After a messy public breakup, soap opera darling Jasmine Lin Rodriguez finds her face splashed across the tabloids. When she returns to her hometown of New York City to film the starring role in a bilingual romantic comedy for the number one streaming service in the country, Jasmine figures her new “Leading Lady Plan” should be easy enough to follow—until a casting shake-up pairs her with telenovela hunk Ashton Suárez.

Leading Ladies don’t need a man to be happy

After his last telenovela character was killed off, Ashton is worried his career is dead as well. Joining this new cast as a last-minute addition will give him the chance to show off his acting chops to American audiences and ping the radar of Hollywood casting agents. To make it work, he’ll need to generate smoking-hot on-screen chemistry with Jasmine. Easier said than done, especially when a disastrous first impression smothers the embers of whatever sexual heat they might have had.

Leading Ladies do not rebound with their new costars.

With their careers on the line, Jasmine and Ashton agree to rehearse in private. But rehearsal leads to kissing, and kissing leads to a behind-the-scenes romance worthy of a soap opera. While their on-screen performance improves, the media spotlight on Jasmine soon threatens to destroy her new image and expose Ashton’s most closely guarded secret.

*Thank you to Edelweiss+ and Avon for giving me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.*

For some reason, I’ve been putting writing this review off and like a dumbass I didn’t really takes notes so I truly apologise if this is all over the place. That, however, does not mean I didn’t enjoy the book because HELL YEAH I DID!!

First of all, the characters in this book were phenomenal. Not only the main characters, but also all the side characters felt very well-rounded to me. Even if they weren’t very present in the story, I really liked all the side characters; they brought something to the story and weren’t just unimportant background. All of them being from different Latin American countries made me really happy (there was a Colombian one hehe) and the trans and non-binary rep was very nice.

Unsurprisingly, almost all (if not all) of the characters in the book speak Spanish, and sometimes the dialogue is partly in Spanish. This is definitely not a personal complaint since I speak Spanish, but I do think the book would feel differently at times if you don’t. However, I don’t think there would be too much of a comprehension problem (maybe a tiny bit but nothing consequential).

The plot was relatively fast-paced – more like medium pace. The book is definitely one you can easily binge in a few hours. Funny at times, emotional at others, it’s a very fun read!! Also, special point for a part in the book I appreciated a lot; there is an absolutely beautiful discussion of consent (especially amongst actors but also in general). I was very impressed with it and with how thorough it it was. Truly beautiful.

The romance in the book was 10/10. Sexy as hell but still very romantic and sometimes very cute, I started shipping Jasmine and Ashton from page one (and… I’m definitely not the only one hehe it always makes me laugh really hard when even the side characters are hardcore shippers of the main couple; I love it!!!)

Some scenes in the book are from the perspective of the characters Jasmine and Ashton’s play in the soap opera. I’m not sure whether I loved them or am more on the fence about them. At times, they were very fun to read, and at others I just wanted to move on and know what was actually happening. Still, I think in the end those scenes were important for the plot and the story and I wouldn’t take them out even if I could.

But more importantly, something I think might bother some people is the graphic sex scenes. This isn’t a problem for me, but I know some people don’t like it. It is well written, but if you’d really rather avoid those kinds of scenes you’ll have to skip those parts… or don’t read the book.

Two little pet peeves of mine are in this book though. The first one is when a character has a very good reason for doing something and the other character is mad at them for doing it without knowing that good reason and the character DOESN’T SAY ANYTHING. Ugh it’s infuriating!!! The other one is that some sentences in the book are repeated multiple times. This doesn’t always bother me if it isn’t too noticeable (aka the sentences are common enough that I don’t notice) but in this case, it was just glaringly obvious. While this wasn’t that bad, it still was a little unnecessary, easily fixable and annoying.

Other random thoughts: the cover is GORGEOUS, the title of this book honestly gives me life, Yadriel (Ashton’s son) is the cuuuuutest, and Jasmine’s grandma (well, Jasmine’s whole family except her parents) literally have my heart.

All in all, this was a great sexy and romantic and fun book I binged in a day and wouldn’t hesitate to reread!! And one I totally recommend, especially to other Latinx and/or lovers of telenovelas and soap operas!!

This is definitely a book to keep in your radar!!! I’d love it if you could recommend me some Latinx books in the comments, I’ve read a few but I am always looking for more!

Stay safe everyone!! Sending you lots of love!!! ❤️
