Hey everyone! This is my first Top Ten Tuesday and I’m really excited!!! For this first Tuesday I chose to do my own prompt simply because it’s an excuse to do this post that I’ve wanted to make for a while.
I know my blog is about books, but for today we’re going to forget that! Because thanks to quarantine and summer break, I’ve had a ton of time not only to read but also binge watch a lot of TV shows. Here are some of my favourites shows!!!
I intend to watch a bunch more, I’ve been very into kdramas and cdramas recently so this list is mostly that but I think I’ll do updated versions every once in a while!
*disclaimer: most of these shows are not in english. If you’ve never watched an other-than-english tv show, I totally recommend you do! Discover different incredible cultures and get to know shows that are just as good, if not better than american ones, because believe me north American TV isn’t the only thing that exists!!! So get out there and read some subtitles.*
*disclaimer 2: these are in no particular order. except the Untamed. cause that one always comes first*
*disclaimer 3: I’m terrible at explaining what a show/book is about, so if it sounds bad it’s because of me and not the show – I promise the show is amazing, so do yourself a favour and check it out!!!*
• The Untamed (aka Chen Qing Ling, 陈情令) and Mo Dao Zu Shi (魔道祖师) •
(i wish i could put more than 5 stars cause it deserves like ten thousand million and a half stars)
This baby will always always come in first place (even if the other shows aren’t in order). It literally gave me life!!! The Untamed is the live action adaptation of Mo Dao Zu Shi (the book) but MDZS is also an anime (and I NEED the third season rip). If you hadn’t already guessed based on the name, this is a Chinese TV Show that took over the world (I’m not even kidding, that show broke all records. The book has like a million adaptations, it’s so crazy and I’m so proud 😭). I could talk about this show and anime and book and audio drama and manhua for hours but I’ll keep it short; I haven’t loved anything THIS MUCH in sUCH a long time. The live action is on Netflix (watch it if not for the amazing plot and characters then for Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo lol), it’s the absolute best and feel free to dm me if you need me to explain (the beginning can be a little confusing) or if you need to scream!!! And get the tissues ready for episode 32-33, I sobbed for three whole ass hours (and I watched all 50 episodes in 4 days during a school week).
Plus, this show made me want to learn Chinese, which is really great because the more I learn the more I think the language is fascinating.
所以，我在学习中文!!! (I hope that’s correct, oops)
As soon as this whole virus thing is over, I have a long enough break, and enough money, I am jumping on a plane and spending a month in China, a month in South Korea, and a month in Japan. You can’t stop me.
• The Good Place •
I watched this show just recently and absolutely loved it!!! This version of the afterlife was so interesting and the show immediately grabs you and doesn’t let you go! It has four seasons, but the episodes are short and there aren’t many in a season, so it’s fairly quick to watch. I will be eternally grateful they didn’t try to make it last as long as possible, milking it for money and therefore ruining it. It was the perfect length and ended when it needed to. The characters are also really really amazing, every single one of them, and (again) so interesting. The balance between humour and seriousness was also perfect. This is a show I will be rewatching and one you should totally watch if you haven’t yet!!!
• The King: Eternal Monarch •
AAAAHHHHH as I’m writing this, only 9 episodes are out (and episode 8 came out today – I died)!! Another one comes tomorrow, but then I’ll have to wait an another week T-T. This show is honestly binge watch worthy – and by that I mean the episodes are a little over an hour long as KDramas usually are, I started watching it at 10pm and binge watched all 8 episodes until 6am. RIP my sleeping schedule, but proof of how good this show is! You’ve already been warned of how terrible I am at explaining plots, but if I say parallel universes, royal families, betrayal, angst, love, humour, would that convince you? I hope it has, because that show is!!! so!!! good!!! Also I don’t know if you guys have noticed already but I’m a sucker for angst and this show DELIVERS. So this show isn’t finished yet and I’m soooo scared about the end (we all know kdramas like to finish tragically. I’m so scared. aahhh) But anyway you should totally watch this but just wait until the show is over cause this is painful.
• The Good Witch •
As I’m writing this I’m watching the last episode of the show! It definitely isn’t the most ground-braking show, and yet it is such an amazingly sweet, rather calm, and fun show. If you’re looking for a good background TV show, this is it!! You do get really attached to the characters and the episodes are more or less independent of one another which is also good if you want to watch one every once in a while (or binge watch it while doing other things just like I did). I really hope you give this show a chance – even though it might be less exciting than other shows – because I really enjoyed watching it and I’m sure you would too!
• Goblin •
As I’m writing this (yes I’m gonna keep using that sentence) I’m on episode 5? of the show, and LOVING IT. I decided to give it a try because many people recommended it to me and because it’s apparently considered one of the greatest kdramas of all time. It really isn’t what I expected, but in a great way. It’s a lot funnier than I thought it would be which is awesome, the bromance between the grim reaper and the goblin gives me life. Also I just learned it’s also called Guardian: The Lonely and Great God which is wild. I cannot wait to watch more of it!!! (the only thing that weirded me out a bit was the age difference between the two main characters. When she’s 29 it’s fine, but otherwise it was huhhh. Anyway it wasn’t that bad but you’ll see when you watch it)
Edit: I finished this show a few days ago and I really, really recommend it!!! The end made me cry my eyes out as usual with kdramas but anyway it was very weird and funny and sad and amazing and I just… loved it!!!
• Meteor Garden •
Meteor Garden was also one of the first tv shows that was recommended to me. It’s a cdrama, the second one I ever watched if I’m not mistaken, and the one I watched is the recent one (I think there’s an older version but they did a remake not too long ago and that’s the one I watched). Honestly, I thought this show was really good! The characters are really cute and it’s a good show to practice your Chinese. The only rather big complaint I have about it is that like most cdramas the show is pretty long (around 40 episodes I think but they’re normal length not like the hour+ long kdrama episodes) and the middle is just… so repetitive. I stopped watching it a little while ago and have yet to finish it – something I will do in the next few days – because I’ve been told the end is worth it. Still, I think it’s worth the watch!!
• The King’s Avatar •
(five million stars)
AAAH you guys!! This cdrama is second only to The Untamed (because nothing and no one can surpass that show). I randomly found it on netflix and!!!! binge watched the 40 episodes in about three days (I’m not joking. I was also doing school at the same time. I would literally hide and watch this during class). Unlike The Untamed, this is more of a contemporary/dystopia (kind of), but it’s SO GOOD. This show is particularly good for you guys who DON’T LIKE ROMANCE. This show is completely romance free (and I’m glad, it didn’t feel like it was lacking it at all, it was perfect) and focuses more on competition, friendships, betrayals, and, most importantly, video games.
Now let me tell you I am absolutely not a gamer. I think it would be fun but I also think I would get obsessed and that it would be one too many obsessions for me I just don’t have the time for it. And yet this show was so well done not only it made me want to start gaming, it was also just super interesting and fun to watch despite not knowing anything about gaming. The main actor (Yang Yang playing Ye Xiu/Qiu) is BEAUTIFUL, but seriously all the main actors are so precious and amazing. If there’s one cdrama you need to watch (BESIDES THE UNTAMED OF COURSE) this is definitely it. Please give it a try you won’t regret it!!!
PS: there’s also an anime if you’d rather watch those, I believe it’s closer to the book and it was done by the same people who made the mo dao zu shi (the untamed) anime. Definitely also worth a watch!!
• Romance is a Bonus Book •
(ten million stars)
UWUUUU okay so let me cry here for a second about this show. I watched it like three or four days ago (binge watch worthy 10/10) and omg it was I think my favourite kdrama so far. Here are some of the things I loved:
- this does not happen in high school thank god
- the main characters are in their late twenty/thirties (the protagonist is 37)
- they work in publishing which made it so interesting for me since it’s what I want to do
- the main male character Eun-ho played by Lee Jong-suk is one of the most gorgeous men I have ever seen and I mean watch this if only to stare at his face for the whole 16 episodes
- Eun-ho is also one of the MOST PRECIOUS characters I have ever seen in a show in my entire life. I would die for him no joke he’s so cute and so precious and so perfect and like omfg watch the show you’ll understand
- it was very hard but interesting to watch the struggles someone can have at getting a job after a long break – especially for women who decided to stay at home to raise their children, which is the case of the protagonist
- I’m usually not the biggest fan of friends to lovers but this was honestly the ultimate friends to lovers show I have ever seen. BEST FRIENDS TO LOVERS EVER. It was amazingly well done
I could honestly keep going, but I’ll stop for now. It was such a heartwarming story that kept me up past 6am and please please please watch it you won’t regret it.
• Crash Landing On You •
If you follow me on instagram, you’ve seen my crying about all these shows already but as I’m writing this I finished this show yesterday at about 4am. People have recommended this to me so many times, and yet I’ve been reluctant to watch it just because I expected it to be so… heavy. All I’ve heard from people is you’ll cry so much and it’s so sad but so good and honestly they definitely weren’t wrong but they left out one important part that would have made me watch this show so much sooner. And if that’s also the case for you, I hope this changes your mind as well, because I loved this show so, so damn much.
Crash Landing On You is SO FUNNY. So so so funny. That show is like 90% crack and 10% tragedy (and no there’s no in-between). This is something I really wasn’t expecting and it made this show a million times better. I had the best time watching it, and I know you will too! So prepare the tissues for when you cry of laughter and when you cry of sadness, but oh my god watch this show.
• Heartland •
Heartland is a very cute show – more or less the same “kind” of show as the Good Witch – that I’ve been watching with my mom for years. I’ve never finished it because at the time we were watching it in french and there were only a certain number of seasons (it’s pretty long though I think, at least 10 seasons if not more) but now it’s on Netflix (all of it, yay!!) so we’re rewatching all of it. It’s the story of a ranch in Alberta, Canada and what happens with all its inhabitants. The story starts when the main character’s mom dies in a car accident (while she’s in the car) trying to save a horse and when the main character comes back from the hospital turns out a guy that she had given a job to a guy fresh out of juvie before she died. The main character – Amy – work with horses like her mom did before her and is a “horse whisperer”.
I love horses which makes the show doubly good and you get really attached to the characters (especially the main couple they’re sooo cute) and just like the Good Witch it’s a really good background TV show! The rep isn’t so good considering the show started in the early 2000 (but that’s no excuse) but beyond that, it’s a great show. Definitely worth the watch!!
I hope I’ve convinced you to watch some of these shows (especially The Untamed. Watch it, read it and listen to it pleaaaase you won’t regret it)!! Tell me if you’ve watched some of these already and what you thought! If you haven’t, I would love to hear which ones you want to watch and your thoughts when you do!!
