Some things you can do to help // a small guide for non-black people like me

Hello everyone!! I know this post has nothing to do with books or entertainment or anything, but in light of some recents events I’m sure everyone has heard of, I thought this post would be appropriate.

What is currently happening around us is truly sickening and heartbreaking. I wanted to share some links directly but I figured it would be easier to just put them all in a short blog post. As a non-black & white-passing person, I realise it is important to not only educate myself but also support others the most that I can and in the best ways that I can.

It’s important to speak up and make sure these things don’t go unnoticed. Things need to change, and they need to change now.

Petitions to sign and where to donate:

I will simply link to a thread on twitter that is very complete with lots of petitions. You can find it here. There is also a website (included in the thread) called Justice for Big Floyd where you can find another petition.

This is also included in the thread, but for those who don’t live in the USA, here are some postal codes you can use:

  • 90015 – Los Angeles, California
  • 10001 – New York City, New York
  • 75001 – Dallas, Texas
  • And 19147 – Philadelphia, PA (my postal code from when I lived there)

EVERYONE reading this should open that link and read it. This is a website that teaches you and explains (also offers classes but if I’m not mistaken you have to pay for those) what to do as a bystander. Most of us (non-black folks) will be bystanders and it’s so important to educate yourself on how to take action (and most importantly how to take good action) in those situations.

Some books to read:

Disclaimer that I haven’t read any of them but I will make sure to read at least a few if not all of them either at the end of June or July. If anyone wants to join me in reading these, do let me know!!

(clicking on the pictures will send you to the book’s goodreads page)

I also want to point to this link where there are a ton more books for you to check out!! Find it HERE. (You can probably find plenty more threads on twitter)

This ebook from the link/list above is currently free to download for a few days so I think it’s a good place to start!

If you have any other recommendations, please put them in the comments!!!

Either way, I don’t think this is enough and I don’t think it’ll ever be enough, but hopefully it’ll be a start. The world is a scary place right now, it’s just a much, much scarier place for POC and (especially) black people. So, stay safe everyone, educate yourself and be careful.

Lots of love ❤️
